First Edit

This is our first edit for our music video. We decided to film a sequence rather than shoot various different parts of the music video. We chose Queens Gardens for our location, as we do have various other locations within the narrative, but it was more convenient for everyone to get here and less busy, as there are large crowds around due to the christmas shopping.

Still Shots While Filming For Ancillary Texts

Test Shots

Manpreet and I did test shots quite a while back, but the format wasn't correct for iMovie and so we decided to do some extra shots on our first day of filming. This allowed Owen time to get the hang of using the puppet and gave us time to practice the shots we needed to do.

Behind the Scenes

These are the behind the scenes photos that we took whilst filming in Queens Gardens. Luckily it wasn't too busy because of the time of year that we shot, so it fit well with our narrative.

Text Message Screenshots

We originally planned on filming on a Saturday, but due to Owen being busy, we rescheduled for the Sunday. These screenshots show the conversation of us organizing the day and time of which we will film.

Necessities (Props)

The main prop that we will use in our music video is the puppet, that the video mainly revolves around. Manpreet spotted him in a vintage shop quite a while back and luckily when she went back in to buy him, he was still there.
Puppet: £6 - Vintage Store

Another necessity that we want for the music video is a bow tie for the protagonist, Owen, to wear.
We don't yet have this, but we're keeping an eye out for a cheap one that we can buy, as none of our friends/family own one.
Bow Tie:

The last thing that we need is a smaller bow tie, for the puppet to wear. This is another item that we're keeping a look out for. It's likely to be found in a child section of a clothing store, so the weekend before filming I will have a look around.
Small Bow Tie:

We couldn't find any bow ties in time for filming our first draft, so we're possibly thinking of ordering two off the internet. This means they will arrive in time for our next filming schedule. We may even need four bow ties in total. The first two being plain and used mainly throughout the video and the final two being used at the end to show the change in Owen's life, and to symbolise his inspiration and the change in his life.

Target Audience

My target audience is both genders, but possibly mainly female of the ages 15-21, who enjoy music of the indie folk genre. My music video will accompany this genre and reflect it, so an audience with this interest is likely. The music video will evoke emotion and an audience will need to follow the narrative, and in some cases be able to relate. The stereotype for a person who enjoys music of the indie folk genre is someone who enjoys nature and being outdoors, and wearing neutral coloured clothing. The target audience is likely to have a keen interest in social media and music of the indie genre.

Weather Forecasts

I checked the weather on multiple occasions so I was able to decide which days would be suitable to film on. I wanted to film on weekends, as that was the only time that everyone was fully available, but the weather often got in the way, especially as the majority of the filming is outside.
(Friday 28th - Friday 5th)
(Wednesday 10th - Wednesday 17th)

We originally planned on filming on Saturday 13th, but due to our actors' commitments we had to cancel. We rescheduled for Sunday and luckily the weather forecast doesn't show any signs of rain. It will be around 9 degrees, which shouldn't affect anyone too badly as we will be wearing suitable clothing and will be able to go inside if it gets too cold. Filming in winter means we will have to take precautions to look after both the equipment and ourselves, but being in a busy environment means we will easily be able to take shelter and keep warm,

Visual Storyboard

Manpreet and I analysed the lyrics to our chosen song and created a visual storyboard of what we pictured when we heard the particular lyrics. Some lyrics were obvious and easy to pick a photo for, such as the 'Lisa like brandy...', as we would obviously automatically think of a glass of brandy. Whereas lyrics such as 'on my last night on earth i won't look to the sky...' were quite difficult, as it implies he doesn't look to the sky, therefore we chose a photo of the earth. The whole lyrical analysis shows that overall the song is quite a positive and uplifting one, which our own chosen narrative also attempts to reflect.

Filming Diary

Tuesday 9th - Text Owen and see if he's available to film for the chosen weekend. Due to him having a job we need to ask in advance to check his availability.

Wednesday 10th - We will need to book the camera and tripod out a few days in advance, in order to make sure there are enough for us to get one.

Thursday 11th - We will check the weather forecasts to make sure the weather will be okay for us to film outside on the Saturday.

Saturday 13th - On the Saturday we will begin filming at various locations, such as Fruit, the Maritime Museum and Queen's Gardens. All locations are fairly close to each other, so this should enable us to get a large majority of filming done. (This was changed due to unavailability of our actor, so we rescheduled for Sunday instead.)

Sunday 14th - On the Sunday we will upload the footage to enable us to edit it at a later date.

Monday 15th - We will return the camera and tripod to college and begin editing.

Inspiration Overview

The idea for the narrative is largely inspired by Pinocchio, which may seem obvious from the use of a marionette. Manpreet saw the marionette in a vintage store and that gave her the idea to use it. The messages and values in Pinocchio are quite similar to that of our music video, in the sense that themes of hope and friendship are present in both. Our intention is to put across the same message of hope and persistence, that is also present in Pinocchio and create an uplifting video.

I made a short video on Windows Movie Maker to put all of my inspiration into one place. I got some footage from gigs and although we're not adding a singing performance, we do have a lot of acting and performing of the puppet.
